Probiotics and Longevity

The idea of long life has been the focus of human interest since long before Ponce de Leon (1458-1521) sought the fountain of youth in Florida. From the beginning of human life on Planet Earth most people have wanted to live longer and have pondered every conceivable way to achieve that goal.

In our time the interest in longevity is so persistent that numerous organizations have sprung into existence to explore ways and means of reversing or slowing the aging process.

It is a no-brainer that management of the body for optimum health maintenance will normally, barring fatal accidents or murder, extend life. Health maintenance is the key to life extension.

Intestinal Flora

Arguably the most important of all health maintenance and life extension factors relates to the situation in the intestinal tract. Indeed, it is now scientifically established and known in ever widening circles that intestinal health is foundational to the health of all body systems.

Formerly unknown words such as prebiotics, probiotics, symbiotics and biofermentics have sprung into usage among health professionals, although understanding is lagging in the general public.

What’s it all about? In a word, it’s about the billions of tiny living things called bacteria or microbiota that inhabit the human intestinal tract and largely determine the issues of life and death for every inhabitant of our world.

Formerly the big issue in professional health circles was food values, nutrition and nutritional supplements such as multi-vitamins, minerals etc. Now there’s a paradigm shift to focus on the crucial importance of the intestinal flora and the primary understanding of what happens in that part of the body.

Let’s take a closer look at the intestinal flora. Biologists use the word flora to designate the mass and variety of microorganisms which reside in the intestinal tract.

Our human intestinal flora consists of 100 or more different varieties of microorganisms – also called microbiota – that reside in our intestines.

Some of them protect and preserve health, while others are harmful to health.

In proper balance, the superior quantity and activity of friendly microbiota maintain predominance, enhancing digestion and absorption of foods, assuring strong immunity, and protecting the body from disease causing harmful (pathogenic) germs.

Intestinal Health

Intestinal health is all-important. It is the foundation for nourishing all body systems. Indeed, it is widely believed by nutritionists and health professionals that almost all diseases begin in the intestines, and the cure of most diseases must begin there as well.

Overwhelmed by junk food, chronic constipation, perpetual stress and toxins in air, water, soil and food, harmful intestinal bacteria can proliferate, gain predominance and impose disease at some point of vulnerability in the body.

It follows that the key questions about health maintenance are simply these: How can we maintain a healthy situation within our intestinal tract? How can we assure that the "good" microbiota will predominate within our intestinal flora on a continuing basis?

Avoidance of bad foods and constipation, toxins and stress are important precautions. However, such an ideal living pattern in the germ-ridden, polluted modern environments in which most of us live our lives is largely impossible for most of us.

What, then, can we do?

Following is a list of just a few of the benefits that good Probiotic supplements, introduced to a properly functioning intestinal tract, may be expected to produce:

Deliver billions of Probiotic metabolite micronutrients to the intestinal tract

Regulate the intestinal ecosystem for the dramatic increase of beneficial bacteria

Foster healthful predominance of beneficial microorganisms in the intestinal flora

Decisively enhance digestion and absorption of all varieties of foods

Strengthen the immune system for protection against germs

Detoxify and nourish all of the body_s cells, tissues and organs

Reduce stress effect, improve mood, restful sleep, energy and stamina

Deliver energizing power to the very core of the physical and mental life

Revitalize all body systems

Probiotics, together with biofermentic supplements that prepare the intestinal tract for optimal Probiotic effect, are now bringing a paradigm shift – a new understanding of the crucial role of the intestinal flora in optimization of health.

The current understanding is that the intestinal environment into which foods are delivered will largely determine Probiotic effectiveness, promote good health, and foster longevity of life.

This reality is not difficult to grasp. The best garden seeds in the world will produce nothing if planted in a parched, rocky soil environment that is void of nutrients, water and sunshine. The same seeds planted in fertile soil and blessed by the sun will produce an abundant harvest.

In a word, the environment makes the difference. Whether you are talking about a garden plot or your intestinal interior, the principle is the same. Health and longevity will bless the lives of those who ingest good nutritious foods into an intestinal environment that is prepared to maximize their effectiveness.

In our unsanitary, polluted, gluttonous modern world the human body needs help to cleanse, detoxify, re-fortify and prepare the intestinal environment for the foods that are delivered to it.

Optimization of intestinal tract performance, supported and enhanced by Probiotic supplementation, is a major key to the enjoyment of vibrant health and longevity of life.

It’s a huge subject, so let’s cut to the chase. Is food fermentation helpful or harmful, beneficial or bad?

It depends on what is fermented and what bacteria and/or yeasts are used to activate the fermentation process.

That’s the big issue. There are bacteria that will transform a certain substance into poison, an example being fusel alcohol. Other bacteria will transform the food value of a medium such as cow’s milk or soy milk into a food that is much more valuable for health restoration and maintenance than the original raw food.

If you allow fruits to sit around at room temperature, most will ferment naturally and you’ll toss them out. Natural fermentation has been happening as long as man has inhabited Planet Earth. Seven thousand years ago foods were being fermented naturally in Babylon, China and India.

At some point in time it was discovered that certain naturally fermented foods actually appealed to the taste buds and were preserved longer. It became popular to allow fermentation, but nobody knew about bacteria, yeasts or their role in causing fermentation, which just "happened to happen."

In modern times food fermentation processes have become both a highly developed science and a far reaching global industry producing billions of tons of fermented foods and beverages such as yogurt, kefir, beer, pickles, kimchi, natto, salami, wine, bread, cheese, tofu, soy sauce, etc etc.

And now there’s something new under the sun. Nutritional scientists have discovered some ancient formulas and turned the light of modern research methods on them. Out of this research has come a growing wealth of literature revealing the benefits of fermentation for human health.

Hundreds of different bacteria have been isolated, characterized and named. Classes or categories of bacteria have been broken down into "strains" and their identification has been reduced to jaw-breaking words like lactobacillus rhamnosus, L. reuteri, L. delbrueckii, L. casei, L. helveticus, bifidobacteria, etc. The number of scientific papers based on laboratory studies has quadrupled in a few years.

Leading scientists in Japan have been in the forefront of microbiological research, and have coined the term "biofermentics" to name a burgeoning field of science which has given birth to a production process called Biofermentics.

One scientific paper from Japan, 36 pages in length, lays out in impressive detail the verified functions and health benefits of Biofermentics. This blog can’t name all of them, but following are just ten of the named benefits:

Reinforcement of immune response

Improved metabolism and digestion

Better absorption of nutrients

Restraint of harmful bacteria

Activation of natural Killer cells

Facilitation of neurotransmitters in the brain

Promotion of insulin secretion

Anti cholesterol and anti aging effect

Nourishment of hair

Detoxification of the body

Biofermentics is an elaborate fermentation process which includes a dozen scientifically selected strains of lactobacillus bacteria and 4 different strains of yeast, and is backed by 70 years of research.

NOTE: Including excellent Probiotic supplements in your health maintenance program is a very good idea, because it has been proven that Probiotics strongly support digestion, absorption, detoxification, the immune system and internal cleanliness.

Your body is under attack by millions of vicious microscopic predators called germs day and night throughout your life. The marvel is that your body is equipped with elaborate defenses designed to fight off these invaders.

Your body’s defense capability is called your Immune System, and it is a functioning miracle. Let’s look at some of the main actors that comprise your immune system and see how they operate:

Your Phagocytes. Their name literally means “giant eaters.” They are faithful and valiant sentries that stand guard in all the tissues of your body. Produced in your bone marrow, they grow in size and wander out through your bloodstream.

Always on the alert for invading germs that would impose illness on your body, they detect them and rip them to pieces. Thank God for your Phagocytes, also called your Macrophage Cells. They are your first line of defense.

Your T Cells. Referred to as T Lymphocytes, and also as White Blood Cells, they are processed through your thymus gland located at the base of your neck. They receive signals from your Macrophage Cells which enable them to identity invading germs by deciphering the combination of molecules on their surfaces, and they mobilize a massive counterattack.

A sub-set of the T Cells is called the T Helper Cells. They send out a chemically-conveyed call for reinforcements. More microscopic troops swarm to the battle and join the fight. The battle rages on with incredible fury.

Your Natural Killer Cells. These guys are a mysterious but powerful volunteer force. They seem to come out of nowhere and appear on the scene of battle ready for action. They are like highly effective “shock troops” rushing to the aid of your Macrophage Cells and your T Lymphocyte Cells. Their welcome role is to help turn the tide of battle against the attackers.

Your B Cells and Antibodies. These amazing cells respond to the call to action, begin reproducing rapidly and differentiate into Plasma Cells, which produce counterattacking molecules called Antibodies. Your Antibodies are precisely programmed to recognize the invading germs and to counterattack them in force.

If your immune defenses are operating normally and effectively, the invaders will be overwhelmed and defeated. Then your Macrophage Cells will clean up the litter of battle – the bits and pieces of the defeated enemy – and expel them from your bloodstream.

Your Memory Cells. After the invaders have been defeated, the defenders will remain in your bloodstream to guard your body against re-infection. The presence of these defenders, something like your body’s “National Guard,” is to remember the enemy who once invaded, and to smash him if he ever again pokes his nose through the doorway of your bloodstream.

This explains why you don’t contract childhood infections repeatedly. You have become immune to them because your valiant "National Guard" of memory cells are blocking entrance by the "bugs" (pathogens) that initially caused those infections.

Although your immune system is amazingly organized, superbly coordinated and highly effective, it can become overwhelmed so that you’ll become vulnerable to infection.

Excessive prolonged stress, exposure to environmental toxins, lack of rest, certain prescription medicines, family feuding and a shabby junk food diet can cripple your defenses. Under those circumstances the harmful germs will likely prevail and you may end up sick or, in more serious cases, very sick. Even death can follow.

You’ll be wise to take control of your precious life. Manage your body! Adopt healthy patterns and habits. Take immune-boosting natural foods and supplements daily.

The super-supplement called SEIGEN – the result of 70 years of scientific research in Japan – is a powerful immune booster. It offers many unique benefits for the entire intestinal tract and all body systems.

With SEIGEN (Japanese word meaning Life-Source) you'll enhance your opportunity to enjoy a long, happy and fruitful life.

Remember, you're worth it!

NOTE: Including excellent Probiotic supplements in your health maintenance program is a very good idea, because it has been proven that Probiotics strongly support digestion, absorption, detoxification, the immune system and internal cleanliness.

Yes, it’s a delicate subject – but smart people will not ignore it!

Constipation is the inability to excrete body waste often enough or in large enough amount for maintenance of good health, and its immediate cause is hard and dry feces hung up in the colon.

Because of junk food diets, stressful living, the taking of certain medications, and the daily drinking of an inadequate amount of water, it’s a major health problem in modern countries – especially the USA.

Even if you don’t want to talk about it, you’d better think about it – because it can cause multiple health problems, turn your whole world gray, and rob you of the joy of living.

Chronic constipation can endanger your health in the following ways:

Cause a serious buildup of health-destroying toxins in your body

Overwhelm the cleansing functions of the liver

Result in excessive continuing fatigue

Can be a contributing factor to mental depression

Cause persistent and recurring headaches

Seriously impair the immune system

Indirectly cause the multiple health challenges that always afflict a poisoned body

How’s that for a menu of misery?

Well, you don’t need to live that way! In many cases 10 or 12 glasses of pure water per day will help to solve the problem. A change of diet can also be very helpful – less meat, eggs, white bread, cookies, cake, pie, milk and ice cream. More vegetables, salads with olive oil, fruits and plant-based foods in general.

Most of us develop habits of external cleanliness like washing our hands before meals and daily bathing. It’s even more important to keep our intestines clean so that we will enjoy optimum health and energy.

The ultimate solution is related to the management of your intestinal tract in such a way that the friendly bacteria that you ingest will multiply rapidly. If your internal “microflora” is in proper balance, you’ll very likely have no problem with either constipation or diarrhea.

NOTE: Including excellent Probiotic supplements in your health maintenance program is a very good idea, because it has been proven that Probiotics strongly support digestion, absorption, the immune system, detoxification, elimination of wastes and internal cleanliness.

Is all the hooplah about “probiotics” a new fad, or is it based on reality?

No doubt you’ve heard “probiotics” mentioned on radio or TV, or seen something about it in print. What’s the truth? What can you reasonably believe?

Claims are made that probiotics (dietary supplements containing beneficial bacteria) can help to restore and maintain health. True or false?

Let’s have a look.

First, face the fact that your body is loaded with bacteria – about 100 trillion of those tiny single celled forms of life. Most are beneficial for your health; many are harmful. In every moment of your life there rages a struggle for predominance between the beneficial and the harmful – the good and the bad, the heroes and the villains.

The truth is that your health and ultimately your very life depends on a wide range of functions performed by your beneficial bacteria. Some of these functions are food metabolism, digestion, absorption of nutrients into your bloodstream, detoxing your body, and strengthening your immune system. Obviously these functions are crucial for maintenance of good health.

Most health practitioners agree that challenges to health begin mainly in the intestinal tract, and that’s where solutions must begin as well.

Fortunately, scientists have for many years been studying bacteria – isolating and assigning names to an array of good and bad bacteria. A large number of bacteria have been discovered and named by microbiologists, who have also identified multiple strains of bacteria within many of the major categories.

Names like lactic acid bacteria, bifidobacteria and bacteroides are beginning to find their way into the vocabulary of people who care about their health.

Some key questions are:

1. Which bacteria are the most effective in enhancing digestion, absorption and immunity – and promoting general health?

Answer: multiple strains of lactic acid bacteria

2. Do these bacteria perform best singly or symbiotically (working together, mutually)?

Answer: Their effectiveness is increased when they work together, each improving the effectiveness of the others.

3. How can they best be introduced to the body?

Answer: They are easily introduced to the intestinal tract (mouth, stomach, duodenum, small and large intestines) simply by swallowing them as supplements in the form of powders, liquids or capsules.

4. Does the quantity of “Probiotic” bacteria that are introduced to the intestines make a difference?

Answer: YES! Intake of Probiotics in quantities ranging from 5 billion to 100 trillion or more is possible, and scientific studies have concluded that the larger quantities are decidedly more beneficial for health restoration and maintenance.

Conclusions:

Probiotic science has stated and sustained its case overwhelmingly. The science of probiotics is far more than a fad that will fade away.

The wisdom of Probiotic supplementation is rooted in decades of science and demonstrated performance verified by double blind studies and reported in numerous prominent scientific journals.

Claims of the value of probiotics for health maintenance are evidence based, credible and most certainly reliable.

NOTE: Including excellent Probiotic supplements in your health maintenance program is a very good idea, because it has been proven that Probiotics strongly support digestion, absorption, and the immune system.

Discussion?
What are your thoughts? Contributions? Questions? We have been studying Probiotics in depth, and we would love to hear from you.

How are you doing down there in the middle of your body?

If you’re like a huge segment of the USA population, you are having more than your share of discomforts. Like regurgitation of gastric acid, burning sensation in your esophagus, bitter taste in your throat, nighttime coughing, burping and even nausea.

It’s often called “heartburn,” but it has nothing to do with your heart. In most cases these unwelcome symptoms are caused by indigestion. That means your digestive system is not functioning properly.
WHY wouldn’t your digestive system function properly? If you’re a typical American one or more of the following habits or issues might be causing your indigestion:

Overeating

Gulping down food too fast

Eating the wrong foods

Eating the wrong combinations of foods

Stress in the family or workplace

Inadequate Sleep

These or a few other issues may be sentencing you to a life of misery that affects your personality, your productivity and your enjoyment of life.
Face it! Your fast-paced stressful lifestyle and gulping down junk food “on the run” isn’t compatible with proper eating and digestion.

Let’s have a look at digestion. How does it work?

The digestive glands that act first are in the mouth—the salivary glands. Saliva produced by these glands contains an enzyme that begins to break down the starch from food into smaller molecules. An enzyme is a substance that speeds up and facilitates chemical processes in the body.

The next set of digestive glands is in the stomach lining. They produce stomach acid and an enzyme that digests protein. A thick mucus layer coats the mucosa and helps keep the acidic digestive juice from dissolving the tissue of the stomach itself. In most people, the stomach lining is able to resist the juice, although food and other tissues of the body cannot.

After the stomach empties the food and juice mixture into the small intestine, the juices of two other digestive organs mix with the food. One of these organs, the pancreas, produces a juice that contains a wide array of enzymes to break down the carbohydrate, fat, and protein in food. Other enzymes that are active in the process come from glands in the wall of the intestine.

The second organ, the liver, produces yet another digestive juice—bile. Bile is stored between meals in the gallbladder. At mealtime, it is squeezed out of the gallbladder, through the bile ducts, and into the intestine to mix with the fat in food. The bile acids dissolve fat into the watery contents of the intestine, much like detergents that dissolve grease from a frying pan.

After fat is dissolved, it is digested by enzymes from the pancreas and the lining of the intestine. Most digested molecules of food, as well as water and minerals, are absorbed through the small intestine. The small intestine contains many folds that are covered with tiny fingerlike projections called villi. In turn, the villi are covered with microscopic projections called microvilli.

These structures create a vast surface area through which nutrients can be absorbed. Specialized cells allow absorbed materials to cross into the blood, where they are carried off in the bloodstream to other parts of the body for storage or further chemical change. This part of the process varies with different types of nutrients.

In summary, “digestion” is the process by which your body breaks down and processes foods, chemically converting them into absorbable nutrients. Beginning in the mouth, it continues through all parts of the digestive tract including the stomach, duodenum, small and large intestines.

Well digested nutritious food feeds all parts of the body, promoting the health of cells, tissues and organs, enhancing energy, strengthening immunity, and contributing to optimal health, wellbeing and enjoyment.

But we have all known hard-driving, purposeful, intelligent and successful people who managed their business or profession well, yet did a shabby job of managing their own body – and died much too young.

For your sake and for the sake of those who love you, take control! Your body is a precious gift. Respect it enough to manage it better.

1. Slow down and smell the roses.
2. Study foods and proper combinations of foods.
3. Strongly emphasize plant-based foods rather than beef and pork laced with fat, or other products of animals such as milk and eggs.
4. Avoid processed, spiced meats that come in cans or strips like bacon, sausages and hotdogs.
5. Get 8 or 9 hours of good sound sleep every night.
6. Take a superior supplement that will significantly aid digestion.

NOTE: Including excellent Probiotic supplements in your health maintenance program is a very good idea, because it has been proven that Probiotics strongly support digestion, absorption, and the immune system.

Let's take a quick peek into the invisible world of bacteria.

Despite the fact that America's food supply is among the safest in the world, the fact is that sometimes the food we eat can make us sick. Why? Because under certain conditions the invisible enemy called “bacteria” may be present on foods when purchased or get into food during preparation, cooking, serving or storage.

Although we can't see bad bacteria, millions of them may already be on a kitchen sponge, a cutting board, or food itself. Most cases of food-related illness can be prevented if everyone who handles and prepares food learns how to fight hostile bacteria.

The villains can be stopped with a little know-how – using such everyday weapons as soap and hot water, a refrigerator and a food thermometer.

Some Plain Facts

Scientists have been studying bacteria and other tiny organisms (like viruses) that cause food-related illness for a long time. They have learned these important facts:

Bacteria are a part of all living things and are found on all raw agricultural products;

Harmful bacteria can be transferred from food to people, people to food, or from one food to another;

Bacteria can grow rapidly at room temperature;

Growth of harmful bacteria in food can be slowed or stopped by refrigerating or freezing;

Food-related illness can produce symptoms from mild to very serious. Illness can occur from 30 minutes to two weeks after eating food contaminated with harmful bacteria;

People who are most likely to become sick from food-related illness are infants and young children, senior citizens and people with weakened immune systems.

Four Simple Steps for Fighting Back:

Food safety experts recommend that everyone should think about food safety at each step in the food handling process – from shopping to storing leftovers. What this really means is always following these four simple steps:

CLEAN – Wash hands, utensils and surfaces in hot soapy water before and after food preparation, and especially after preparing meat, poultry, eggs or seafood. Using a disinfectant cleaner or a mixture of bleach and water on surfaces and antibacterial soap on hands can provide some added protection.

SEPARATE – Keep raw meat, poultry, eggs and seafood and their juices away from ready-to-eat foods; never place cooked food on a plate that previously held raw meat, poultry, eggs or seafood.

COOK - Cook food to the proper internal temperature (this varies for different cuts and types of meat and poultry) and check for doneness with a food thermometer. Cook eggs until both the yolk and white are firm.

CHILL – Refrigerate or freeze perishables, prepared food and leftovers within two hours and make sure the refrigerator is set at no higher than 40°F and that the freezer unit is set at 0°F.

Don't risk problems when these simple steps will help you reduce food-related illness. You can't see the microscopic monsters, but take it by faith. THEY ARE EVERYWHERE. Your sideboard may look clean . . . but really, it's DIRTY!

NOTE: Including excellent Probiotic supplements in your health maintenance program is a very good idea, because it has been proven that Probiotics strongly support digestion, absorption, and the immune system.

In the past few years nutritional scientists have focused more than ever before on the microbiological basis of health, energy and longevity. Nutritional researchers are now delving deeply into the mysterious and highly complex world of bacteria.

Their discoveries portend nothing less than a paradigm shift in the understanding of digestion, absorption, disease and optimization of healthful living on Planet Earth.

An unprecedented volume of research papers and books are focusing on microbiota – the tiny living things that largely determine the issues of life and death for every inhabitant of our world. Such terms as prebiotics and probiotics are increasingly attracting the attention of health-conscious people, and new products bearing those words on their label are appearing on the market.

Let’s have a look at these terms. What do they convey? How are they defined? What may they have to do with the universal battle against human disease? How do they relate to the crucial issues of health maintenance and optimization of the quality of life?

Prebiotics

The term prebiotics is derived from the Greek pre (before) and bios (life), with the resultant meaning before life. Simply defined, prebiotics refers to non-digestible food ingredients that beneficially affect the body by escaping digestion in the upper gastrointestinal tract and stimulating the multiplication and/or activity of certain beneficial microorganisms comprising the colonic microflora.

Although they are not themselves living things (bacteria), they are “before life” inasmuch as their presence promotes the proliferation of living things – friendly bacteria – with far-reaching benefits to human health.

If prebiotics are not living things, what are they? What is generally known is that prebiotics are mysterious chemical entities known by jaw-breaker designations such as oligosaccharides, differentiated as fructo-oligosaccarides, isomalto-oligosaccharides, lactilol, lactosucrose, lactulose, pyrodextrins, soy oligosaccharides, transgalacto-oligosaccharides, xylo-oligosaccharides, etc.

Although further discussion of these chemicals is not germane to this article, it is good to know that they have been identified, that they exist, and that they have a crucial role in the maintenance of human health by promoting the multiplication of bacteria – mainly a class of friendly bacteria known as bifidobacteria – that are essential to health maintenance.

Probiotics

The term probiotics is derived from the Greek pro (for) and bios (life), with the resultant meaning “for life” or “life-promoting.” In nutritional science probiotics designates a tiny form of life that promotes the reproduction and proliferation of health-enhancing microorganisms, mainly beneficial bacteria, in the human intestinal tract.

Although prebiotics are dead substances, probiotics are cellular forms of life – mostly bacteria and certain yeasts – that beneficially affect the body by improving the balance within the intestinal microflora.

A recent scientific report defines probiotics simply as “live microorganisms that when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host.” Probiotics are alive, pro-life and pro-health, thus highly important factors in optimizing health, quality of life and longevity.

Chief among the currently known probiotics are 30 identified species of bifidobacteria and 56 species of lactobacillus. Other probiotics are lactococcus, saccharomyces, streptococcus thermophilus and enterococcus.

These strains are currently the subjects of a large volume of scientific research. It is beyond the scope of this writing to report the special characteristics of these species. Rather, let’s look at food sources of probiotics and their special functions in relation to health maintenance.

Food Sources of Probiotics

Increasingly in our time a wide and diverse array of probiotic products are available on the market worldwide. Yogurt is perhaps the best known food that delivers probiotics. But an increasing variety of other foods also deliver probiotic benefits.

Among these are kefir, cheese, fermented and unfermented milk, certain juices, cereals and nutrition bars. Probiotics are also available as dietary supplements composed of dried microorganisms concentrated and packaged as capsules or tablets.

Characteristics of Probiotics

The pace of research on the characteristics of probiotics has accelerated dramatically in recent years. Scientists have identified favorable characteristics that reveal a beneficial effect on the health of the consumer.

Such favorable characteristics specify that probiotics are non-toxic, non-pathogenic, void of adverse side effects, stable during a reasonable shelf life, confer a definite health benefit, and are factually and intelligibly labeled for the consumer. Health claims must be evidence-based and supported by scientifically formulated, conducted and interpreted clinical trials.

It has been established that each person is host to his or her own unique population of microorganisms, often referred to as microbes or microbiota. Those colonizing different parts of the body (mouth, nose, pharynx, stomach, skin, intestines, vaginal tract, etc.) differ from those populating other parts of the same body.

Most colonizing microbes are not harmful in their own particular habitat. The special characteristics of the microbiota that may cause disease are not yet well understood.

Benefits of Probiotics

Obviously much interest focuses on the health benefits derived from the introduction or “feeding” of probiotic foods and formulations into the intestinal tract. At this point in time scientific research has discovered and verified the following 12 benefits which indicate decisively a basis for much encouragement.

Probiotics have been demonstrated to exert a preventive effect against certain diseases.

Probiotics have been proven as active agents in increasing the number of work days.

Probiotics have been proven to enhance lactose digestion.

Probiotics have been demonstrated to decrease certain gastrointestinal disorders.

Probiotics have been useful in decreasing the unwelcome side-effects of certain antibiotics.

Probiotics have been proven clinically to reduce the incidence of postoperative problems.

Probiotics have been proven to enhance immune system function in humans.

The Intestinal Ecosystem

The presence in the intestinal tract and the performance of balanced strains of probiotics is generally positive and pro-health. However, their beneficial effect will depend in considerable degree on the condition of the intestinal environment into which they are introduced.

The intestinal flora is an elaborate ecosystem in which the composition, variety and balance of microbiota will largely determine the function and effectiveness of the “fed” probiotics that are introduced to mingle with the “native” bacteria inside the intestinal system.

To illustrate, suppose the best garden seeds in the world are planted in an ideally fertile, nutrient balanced soil, properly lighted by the sun, and the weather conditions are favorable throughout the growing season.

The result will be a marvelous crop of nutritious vegetables. But if the same seeds were planted is unfertile hard-pan soil lacking adequate sunlight, the result would be vastly different – little yield or none at all.

The principle is clear: the environment will largely determine the result. The typical “Standard American Diet” (“SAD”) is hardly suited to prepare the intestinal environment for service as the ideal host for probiotic effectiveness in optimizing health.

After years of subsistence on the SAD diet, the intestinal tract will likely be clogged with putrified debris that is dumping poisons into the bloodstream and overwhelming the liver.

Desperately needed within the intestinal ecosystem is detoxification, cleansing, chemical reconditioning, enhanced digestion, nutrient absorption and adequate elimination of waste materials.

Biofermentics and the Intestinal Environment

Eminent Japanese scientists have emerged after some 70 years of intensive research with the most effective confirmed solution in the world today. It is called Biofermentics, and its main function is to prepare the intestinal ecosystem for maximization of the effectiveness of both “native” and “fed” probiotics inside the intestinal tract.

As in the case of garden seeds, the environment makes the difference. Good seeds in a bad environment produce poor vegetables if any at all. Good seeds in the proper environment will produce a bumper crop.

Likewise in the intestinal ecosystem, good probiotics introduced to a poisoned and largely malfunctioning intestinal tract will struggle against insurmountable obstacles and contribute little to bodily health.

To the contrary, good probiotics introduced into an intestinal ecosystem prepared by SEIGEN will maximize the effectiveness of the probiotics, thus contributing optimally to digestion, absorption and nutrient distribution throughout the cells and tissues of all body systems.

What actually is Biofermentics, and how does it perform such dramatic functions within the intestinal tract? Biofermentics is itself not a probiotic. It is a product to which Japanese nutritional scientists refer as lactobacillus fermented extracts.

Manufactured by means of an elaborate process using 16 different strains of lactobacilli and 4 different varieties of yeast, it delivers symbiotically perfected metabolites to the intestinal tract.

By this means it prepares the intestinal environment to accommodate the native and fed probiotics in such a way as to maximize their effectiveness.

Result: the climate of the internal ecosystem is detoxed, cleansed and prepared, like fertile soil, to accommodate the prolific multiplication of the friendly bacteria on which optimized health and life itself depends.

Conclusion

Japanese medical practitioners are today recommending and prescribing Biofermentics because it has proven effective in enhancing the effectiveness of standard medical treatments for a wide variety of diseases.

In its own right it has proven remarkably effective in improving intestinal microflora action, reducing stress effect, improving liver and kidney function, improving restful sleep, mood, energy and stamina, healing surgical wounds, ameliorating sugar predominance, enhancing immunity and demonstrating anti-oxidant power and anti-mutagenic action in cells.

Indeed Biofermentics is widely hailed as the super-nutrient that represents a paradigm breakthrough – a whole new category of understanding in the systemic approach to health enhancement, longevity and quality of life.

NOTE: Including excellent Probiotic supplements in your health maintenance program is a very good idea, because it has been proven that Probiotics strongly support digestion, absorption, and the immune system.

Probiotics, the bacteria that have been shown to help certain health disorders, allergies and even some forms of cancer, contain immune system-stimulating DNA, which makes them just as effective when inactivated as when consumed as live microorganisms in dairy products, say US researchers.

The findings, reported in Gastroenterology (DOI:10.1053/j.gastro.2003.11.019), offer considerable potential for food makers previously restricted to adding bacteria to fermented foods like yogurt.

The study, by researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and the Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem, Israel, also reveals a mechanism that can be used to determine and to select which probiotic bacteria are best for patients with IBD (Intestinal Bowel Disorder).

The addition of probiotic bacteria has until now been limited to dairy products such as yogurt because it was thought that they needed to be live to have any effect. Adding live bacteria to other foods would result in fermentation, changing the taste, texture and freshness on an hourly basis.

But the new research suggests that the metabolic activity of probiotics is not in fact key to their protective effect.

The researchers used gamma radiation to reduce the metabolic activity of probiotic bacteria to a minimum. Previous studies, using heat to inactivate the bacteria, destroyed the cellular structure and beneficial aspects.

The irradiated probiotics were given to mice with experimentally induced colitis, which is similar to human IBD. The irradiated probiotics effectively improved the colitis symptoms, as did the administration of viable, 'live' bacteria to another group of mice with colitis. This indicated that inactivated probiotics were as effective as live probiotics.

The scientists say that the beneficial, anti-inflammatory activities seen with the inactivated probiotics could be the product of the innate immune system, the body's instant response to invasion by pathogens.

The European probiotics market is forecast to more than triple in value from €34.6 million currently to €118.5 million in 2010, according to recent statistics from Frost & Sullivan.

But the market research firm also estimated that its gut health cousin, prebiotics, would be helped by much wider scope in applications, as prebiotic ingredients are easily formulated into a number of different foods, including baked goods and even drinks.

The new research could however open a vast range of new application areas to probiotics too. Gut health is currently driving sales of functional foods in Europe, according to a Datamonitor report, outpacing those foods targeting consumers at risk of heart or bone diseases.

In addition to studying the normal and irradiated probiotics on mice, the researchers also tested a synthetic form of bacterial DNA called immunostimulatory (ISS) oligonucleotide (ODN), a short segment of synthetic DNA with immunostimulatory properties, which mimics bacterial DNA.

In a previously published paper in Gastroenterology, ISS-ODN had been found to reduce the harmful effects of experimental colitis in mice, indicating that it worked in a manner similar to probiotics.

Evaluation of the immunostimulatory activities of probiotics may also provide an easy screening system for the selection of probiotic bacteria prior to their clinical use, noted the study's first author, Daniel Rachmilewitz, from the Shaare Zedek Medical Center.

NOTE: Including excellent Probiotic supplements in your health maintenance program is a very good idea, because it has been proven that Probiotics strongly support digestion, absorption, and the immune system.

Enzymes are proteins composed of amino acids, the basic building blocks of life, arranged in chains that spontaneously fold into three-dimensional structures. These three-dimensional structures confer specificity of function. Whereas all enzymes are proteins, not all proteins are enzymes.

Enzymes are involved in nearly all metabolic and physiological processes in the body. Thus, they are a key in the maintenance of a strong immune system, a robust cardiovascular tree, a healthy and intact central nervous system, and optimal hormonal balance in the body.

Over the next 20 years “enzyme therapy” will be the buzzword in nutrition. Enzymes will be the nutritional supplement of the future, and the way we strengthen our immune system.

They are the essential biochemical units of all forms of life. They regulate everything that happens in our system. They coordinate every physical, mental, and emotional activity.

When enzyme activity slows in our body, so does our system's efficiency. Enzymes affect everything, and when enzyme activity stops, we stop. Your understanding of enzymes and enzyme therapy can have an impact on you and your family's quality of health.

The body produces its own supply of enzymes in requisite amounts, as and when they are needed. The enzymes, however, do get "used up" at rates faster than the body can replenish its supplies under a variety of conditions, such as consumption of "junk" foods or intake of medicines.

In fact, with advancing years, the body loses its ability to produce sufficient amounts of enzymes to keep up the demands of the body imposed by metabolic attrition. This insufficiency is a root cause of susceptibility to chronic and age-related diseases.

Given that enzymes are required in all cells of the body to assist in chemical activity, they participate in a myriad of reactions that allow organs, tissues and glands to function optimally and thrive.

If the body is imagined as an efficient chemical factory, it is the enzymes that fuel each and every reaction in that factory. As such, enzymes function as catalysts. That is, they make things work at a faster rate.

The reason enzymes are needed for bodily functions is that, in their absence, most of the physiological processes would either not take place, or would proceed at an excruciatingly slow speed.

In other words, at normal body temperatures, it will be virtually impossible for the cells to perform their tasks speedily and efficiently. Enzymes initiate, maintain, accelerate, and terminate biochemical processes in the body to foster health and vitality.

Since various enzymes have unique structure, each enzyme is meant to carry out a specific task in your body. Any given enzyme is there to fulfill a definite function, and this specificity allows the body to strictly control the use of enzymes.

Once activated, an enzyme will perform its specific function until it is "exhausted," or it is inhibited by another enzyme, in which case its activity is curtailed and/or stopped.

As researchers have found out after years of painstaking and laborious work, there is a good reason for this control: It prevents bodily processes from spinning out of control, which may be detrimental to health and well being.

Dr. H. Edward Rowe
Green Valley, Nevada
702-454-0015

NOTE: Including excellent Probiotic supplements in your health maintenance program is a very good idea, because it has been proven that Probiotics, in cooperation with enzymes, strongly support digestion, absorption, and the immune system.
